MMP Affirms Its Strategic Role in National Nickel Downstreaming: ESG Integration, Market Strategy, and Full Production Target in 2026

Bali – PT Mitra Murni Perkasa (MMP), a subsidiary of MMS Group Indonesia (MMSGI), further affirmed its position in the national nickel downstreaming industry by participating in the prestigious Indonesia Critical Minerals Conference & Expo 2025 at the InterContinental Bali Resort on 24–26 September 2025.

In a panel discussion titled “Shaping Market Trends in Critical Minerals: The Downstream Industry’s Role in Meeting Rising Consumer Demand”, MMP Head of Business Development Amando Kaligis stated that MMP integrates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into every aspect of its operations, forming an important foundation for maintaining business sustainability while strengthening the trust of stakeholders.

“At MMP, we are committed to supporting downstream industrialization that aligns with international sustainability standards, including the IFC Performance Standards, as an effort to strengthen national competitiveness and build the trust of global investors,” he said.

This commitment is not merely an administrative obligation but has become the company’s identity in supporting downstream industrialization in Indonesia. This approach encompasses responsible environmental management, empowerment of communities around the operational area, and transparent corporate governance.

Amid the dynamics of the global nickel market, which is facing challenges of oversupply and fluctuations in EV battery demand, MMP is preparing a market diversification strategy and operational flexibility to remain competitive without being trapped in a price war. According to Amando, this adaptive strategy ensures that MMP can maintain its performance and positive contribution despite the uncertainty of global market conditions.

“In conditions like this, the operational flexibility of the smelter—especially the ability to switch production between ferronickel and nickel matte—becomes key to the ability to adapt to the ever-changing market fluctuations,” he explained.

In terms of capacity development, MMP continues to show significant progress. After successfully starting the “power on” stage, or the early commissioning of its nickel matte smelter using 2×48 MVA Rotary Kiln Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology and modern converters, MMP targets the commissioning of its first production line in mid-2025 and the second line in the fourth quarter of this year. The smelter, located in Kariangau, Balikpapan, is designed to have a production capacity of 28,000 metric tons per year. The company targets full operation of all facilities in 2026, enabling it to make a real contribution to the world-class nickel supply for the EV battery industry.

Another advantage of this project is the fact that MMP is built entirely with 100% domestic capital (PMDN). This strategic decision proves that large-scale strategic industrial projects can be realized by national entities without dependence on foreign investors. This also serves as a symbol of industrial sovereignty and strengthens the spirit of mineral downstreaming championed by the government.

MMP’s journey reflects that the transformation of Indonesia’s nickel industry is not merely an ambition, but a reality that continues to be built sustainably. With an ESG foundation, a strategy responsive to global market dynamics, and a spirit of investment independence, MMP strengthens Indonesia’s role in the world’s electric vehicle battery industry supply chain.

Through these measures, MMP not only creates added value for the national economy but also delivers positive social and environmental impacts. This commitment is concrete proof that industrial progress can go hand in hand with community development and environmental preservation, while affirming Indonesia’s role as an important driver in the global green energy ecosystem.
